Gezi Park Protests, May 2013

The scene above shows a typical scene from the recent Turkish protests with penguins superimposed in the place of protesters. Penguins have come to symbolize what the protesters characterize as the 'cowardice' of the Turkish media, stemming from an incident where one of the major Turkish news stations screened a documentary about penguins rather than cover the protest.

In this episode of Diwaniyya, Duygu Atlas speaks about the social conditions leading up to the protests, which began as an small environmentalist demonstration against the redevelopment of a small park in Istanbul but ballooned into one of the most prolonged periods of civil unrest in recent Turkish history.
