The Muslim Brotherhood - an introduction

"Islam is the solution"

Interest has been spiking of late in the Muslim Brotherhood, the Egypt-based group whose candidate Mohammad Moursi assumed the Presidency of Egypt on June 30, 2012. Candidates from the affiliated Freedom and Justice Party comprised the largest party in Egypt's parliament before it was dissolved by the Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF). Affiliate and offshoot movements are present in Gaza, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, and Iraq.

The Muslim Brotherhood is an archetypical Islamist group, advocating for a strong Muslim influence on national politics and jurisprudence. Their motto is "Islam is the solution".

Who are the Muslim Brotherhood? Where did they come from? What are their beliefs?
This month on Diwaniyya, we will focus on the history and current activities of the Muslim Brotherhood, concentrating mostly on Egypt.

The Muslim Brotherhood of Egypt mantain their own English-language website at www.ikhwanweb.com which provides Brotherhood's take on current events. It outlines their platforms and is updated regularly.
