Hammams in the Movies

In the upcoming episode of Diwaniyya, Miri Shefer and Samir Ben Layashi refer to the 1990 Tunisian film "Halfaouine."
"A coming-of-age comedy/drama set in Tunisia. Twelve-year-old Noura is an impressionable boy who must learn to reconcile two conflicting worlds - the loving world of Moslem women and the vastly different, harsher world of men - while also dealing with his own budding sexuality." - IMDB
Due to the slightly graphic nature of the trailer, we've embedded a clip from the movie (with English subtitles), which gives you a feel for the gender-conscious society in which a young boy nearing puberty — and therefore stuck between the world of women and the world men — finds himself.  You may view the full trailer at your own discretion here.

An excellent short animated film, entitled simply "Hammam" (1992),  by award-winning director Florence Miailhe, may be viewed here. This film features animated graphic nudity, and again viewer discretion is advised.
