Berber Beats

Our next show is on the identity, culture and history of the Berbers — or Amazigh, as they prefer to be called — an ethnic minority in North Africa.

Here's some music to get you in the mood:

Lounes Matoub was an activist for Amazigh rights in his native Algeria. He was an outspoken critic of the Algerian government and a staunch secularist. Revered as a hero of the Amazigh people, Matoub's assassination in 1998 provoked riots in Kabylie.

Hindi Zahra is an Amazigh artist from Morocco who moved to Paris as an adolescent. "Imik Si Mik" is a jazz tune in Tamazight and English.
